From Kevin's perspective in "Target Lingo":

Situation: So...Kelly and I planned to design our own ring using the diamonds from family members' jewelry we have collected over the years. Collectively we thought this would be a great chance to keep the family jewels in the family. Under the circumstances, I (Kevin) needed to find a place in Sioux Falls to live for the upcoming season working at Target. I scheduled a few appointments at apartments and kindly asked Kelly to join to aid in the decision. So that is the set-up.

Behavior: I went over to Kelly's place and picked her up at approximately 4:24 pm. She was not feeling the greatest on just her second day of teaching; she picked up a small cold somewhere down the line (seriously kids wash your hands). We set off with the future in sight (Sioux Falls) and began chatting a little back and forth. I had the ring hidden in the car so Kelly wouldn't find it, along with a big finale in the trunk. While in the car we chat back and forth and decide it would be a great time to visit a jeweler and begin designing the ring of her dreams (even though it was already hidden in the car...she just didn't know it yet). So I play this whole situation up to get her thinking I'm not asking the big question for another 3-4 weeks. We visit apartments, pick one, no big deal. We then head over to Kay Jewelers to visit about rings and do a little shopping. Kelly begins throwing on all sorts of rings and I continue playing up the entire situation knowing in just a few hours I'm going to place this big ol' nasty ring smack on her finger. After an hour of looking around we decide we'll figure things out Saturday when we are back in town.
We then head home to Marshall...this is where it gets good. I tell her how excited I am to go on so many more travels together, calling her my co-pilot, inform her what a good husband I want to be and affirm what a wonderful wife she will be. I tell her "It will be nice to get this ring thing resolved so we can get engaged and just get on with things." TOTALLY HAD HER CLUELESS!!
We arrive at her house I tell her I'll walk her to the door. As I get out of the car, I slip the box into my pocket. I move towards the trunk in step with Kelly. As I place my keys in my pocket I push the trunk opener button. She says "Oh! You accidentally opened your trunk." She begins to close the trunk, but I intervene and push the trunk open to reveal a load of balloons that release and a sign that read "Will you marry me?"
She is caught off guard and just stares at the trunk, meanwhile I move to what I like to call the "finisher." I drop to my right knee....box is cracked open....Round, Solitaire Diamond ring is unveiled before her eyes....she goes breathless....I ask...."Will you marry me Kelly?"......she collapses to the ground and says "Yes."

Outcome: Kelly and I are getting married!!! April 6th is the date we have chosen. We are very excited for the next 7 months as we plan with family and friends. It is an exciting time for the both of us and are looking forward to spending the rest of our lives together.
I (Kevin) learned the best gift you can give, is the one they never see coming. That could probably be a punch line for a boxer but tonight I dropped the elbow. #Maria
